City School student nominated for Sharjah International Biennial

Tooba Zafar from The City School Capital Campus, Islamabad has won first position in the 15-18 year category of the ArtBeat competition organised by The Little Art, a non-profit arts education organisation. ArtBeat was initiated in 2012 to raise awareness about identity, rights and social justice among children and young people. This year the theme was ‘Me/My Rights’ to encourage participants to express through art what they thought about themselves and the times in which they live and to share their perspective with the community.

The event received around 4,000 artworks from across Pakistan, from 132 schools and 160 individual artists and 25 organisations working with special and profiled children. To be one of only 30 winners is a remarkable achievement in itself, but Tooba is also one of just two winners who have been nominated to participate in the Sharjah International Biennial for Children’s Art.

The selections were made by a jury consisting of two National College of Arts faculty members, painter R M Naeem and sculptor Ayesha Zulfiqar, along with freelance designer Maryam Tahir. The national exhibition of ArtBeat kicked-off on 8 October at the Sir Syed Memorial Society, Sector G5, Islamabad followed by an exhibition at Faiz Ghar, Lahore on 18 November with a crowd consisting of nearly 100 parents, teachers and artists. Another exhibition in Karachi is also in the pipeline.
