The dramatic society of Darakhshan campus presented ‘Cinderella – The Musical’ on 6 March 2015. The play depicted the story of Cinderella, starting with her running errands for her stepmother and stepsisters, and their rude behaviour towards her, followed by the castle scenes, and the eventual happy ending. The music and dance sequences, along with the verbal and non-verbal expression of ideas, and the superb dialogue delivery kept the audience glued to their seats. The play also had occasional humorous scenes and laughter, which added comic relief to the story.
The much-appreciated performance took a lot of planning and effort. In February the President of the Drama Society Safina Azeem called a meeting of all the members to brainstorm ideas for the play. After a lot of discussion and editing, the final script was prepared and the rehearsal phase started along with the selection of props and costumes. Finding time to rehearse the play during school hours was not an easy task for the students.
The production of the play empowered the students and gave them an opportunity to take pride in their work. It taught them responsibility, problem solving, management and direction. The social interaction and risk taking allowed them to develop self-confidence and trust in others.
