Book reading encourages children to enjoy new authors and books and leads to improvement in vocabulary, reading and writing skills. In order to inculcate in students the habit of reading, The City School Chiniot Branch celebrated Children’s Book Week from 16 March to 20 March 2015.
Different activities were carried out at various levels for this event:
Playgroup participated by sequencing the story of Little Red Riding Hood through a ‘picture-pasting’ activity and also held a role play.
Nursery students read their favourite books and pasted their own pictures on worksheets, where they also mentioned the titles of their favourite storybooks.
Students of KG selected their favourite books and then designed the cover page of their favourite storybooks after reading and discussing them.
Class 1 students arranged the pictures of a story in sequence and retold it story in their own words.
Class 2 carried out a booklet making activity along with a vocabulary enhancement exercise. Afterwards, depending on its genre, they placed the books under the fiction and non- fiction headings posted on the board.
Whole School Programme
Along with all these activities a story telling and book reading competition was held on Thursday, 19 March. The competition started with the recitation of the Holy Quran. Afterwards, students from all classes participated enthusiastically in reading and retelling stories. The programme ended with words of encouragement by the Headmistress. She appreciated the students and announced the names of the winners who were awarded certificates for their performance.
