Psychology is the science of behaviour and mind, of social interactions, relationships, thoughts and emotions. It is a multifaceted discipline, which includes many sub fields such as abnormality, human development, sports and health. It includes both the conscious and subconscious mind and deals with how the two interact with the world resulting in habit and personality formation. This area helps a student understand both the world round them and their own selves with greater insight and a more nuanced outlook.


How is the subject taught at The City School?

At The City School, the teaching of psychology is geared towards building critical thinking, analytical skills and research design skills, all of which combine to develop inquiry in any subject discipline not just Psychology. These skill-sets have particular significance for students who choose to pursue The Social Sciences or Humanities at the undergraduate level as they are foundational prerequisites for excelling academically. At the same time, providing students with a deep understanding of the subject, understanding of individuals, society, behaviour and cultures, all the while fostering space and empathy for individual differences, also significantly impacts and expedited their own emotional development, allowing them to understand interaction and challenges with a newfound sense of clarity.

At The City School, our goal with Psychology classes is not only to provide an understanding of the subject but also to inculcate crucial 21st Century skills and qualities in our students, which is achieved through interactive and collaborative work conducted in our classes.

It is an essential life-skill which allows us to interpret behaviours, decisions, actions and motivations through a psychological lens.  It provides a more refined viewpoint of the meanings behind our interactions, and how we perceive the world around us. Students who wish to pursue Psychology at A Levels can go on to pursue careers across a range of professions including Clinical psychology, Counselling, Education, Forensics, Health, Sport Sciences, Social Sciences, Therapy, Occupational Studies, Behavioural Studies, Human Resources, Motivational Coaching, Market Research and Neuroscience.
