For TCS alumnus Maham Durrani, attaining a good education was always the primary goal in life. She comes from a family of educationalists, where the need for education and the role it plays in shaping individuals was always emphasised. Her parents chose The City School knowing that it would help shape her future through quality education. Her journey with TCS started as a two-and-a-half-year old girl and concluded with her passing her O Level examinations with flying colours from PECHS Senior Girls Branch.
Maham did her LLB (Bachelors of Law) from the University of London in 2008 and then proceeded to pursue the Bar Vocational Course from The City Law School (Inns of Court School of Law) at City University, London. She then went onto become a member of The Honourable Society of the Inner Temple in London and was called to the Bar by the same as a Barrister in October 2009.
In May 2014, Maham completed her Masters in Law from George Washington University Law School in Washington, DC. Following her graduation, she was awarded the South Asian Bar Association of Washington DC Public Interest Fellowship due to her passion and commitment to human rights and serving her community. She also interned for Karamah Muslim Women Lawyers for Human Rights, where she assisted the staff attorney in representing women who were immigrants/asylum seekers and were victims of domestic violence. Karamah also held the Law and Leadership Summer Programme (LLSP) for Muslim women from all over the world. At the four-week programme, Maham assisted with the training, which included sessions on public speaking, leadership, law and community outreach.
She then went on to work for Amnesty International USA under the Director International Advocacy. She returned to Pakistan in December 2014 to contribute towards bringing a positive change in the country. With specialisation in International Human Rights and Outreach, Maham works as a consultant for international and local human rights organisations in Pakistan.
Maham is also a Law Lecturer at the Institute of Business Management and L’ecole for Advanced Studies (University of London, external programme). Apart from teaching Business, Corporate and Common Law, she also trains students for law moots and public speaking. These students then go on to participate in international moot competitions.
Maham attributes her success and achievements to her school. “My professional achievements in international law and academia bear testimony to The City School’s quality education, coupled with extra-curricular activities such as inter-school debating, creative writing, etc. I am a proud alumnus of The City School Network and owe a huge part of my success to the training I got there.”
